For now, these companies have their versions of the metaverse, which are operational. For example, Fortnight has in the past hosted artist gigs where players around the world can live stream the performances virtually.

Where Did the Term Metaverse Come From?

For those who don’t know, the term metaverse was not discovered by Mark Zuckerburg. The term was first coined in a novel written by Neal Stephenson called Snow Crash in 1992. It was used to refer to a virtual world inhabited by people with the help of avatars. Other books represent this type of world. For example, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Relating what we know from the source of the term and what Mark Zuckerburg is trying to build, we can see that he is trying to build a world where the physical world and virtual reality can coexist.

Why Did Facebook Change its Name to Meta

The main reason Facebook changed its name is to bring all the companies under a new company brand. Another reason is that it is a way for the owner of the company, Mark Zuckerburg, to state that he positions his company to focus on the metaverse. This means all the operations they are going to start working on will be geared towards building the perfect metaverse. So all the companies which were under Facebook, namely, Facebook itself, WhatsApp, and Instagram, all have a new parent company, Meta.

The fact that other companies are working on their representation of the metaverse shows that this technology has come to stay. A metaverse is a form of technology that cannot be shut down instantly. As long as the technology exists, the metaverse continues to exist.

This is probably the most known feature of the metaverse. Almost everyone who has an idea of this technology knows that it is a virtual representation of the physical world. Since the world is gradually moving online because of the pandemic, it will become easier for people to adapt to the metaverse when it is complete. The metaverse will eventually become a place where people can escape from reality.
